Model Code and Standards

The International Council of Bottled Water Associations was formed in 2000 to provide a forum for the global bottled water industry. Members determined to developed a Model Code reflecting industry and government standards that national and regional associations could use as the basis for developing their own code.

The purpose of the Model Code is to provide a guideline for resource protection, standard of identity, standard of hygiene and standard of quality.    The Model Code serves the association members a starting point to define minimum standards and to provide direction for their individual model codes.;

Many of the guidelines reflect standards set by Codex Alimentarius, the guiding organization for international food safety.  The Codex standard for Natural Mineral Waters and Codex standard for Bottled/Packaged Drinking Waters (other than Natural Mineral Waters) have greatly influenced the development of individual country regulations..  Individual country regulators may establish more stringent requirements.  The Model Code is periodically reviewed to insure it continues to reflect industry best practice advancing bottled water food safety practices.
